5 Tips for Businesses to Achieve a Plastic Pollution-Free Christmas

Plastic pollution in the Philippines has already reached an alarming rate and continues to be one of the top environmental challenges for the country and the rest of the globe.

According to a report released by WWF-Philippines in 2020, Filipinos consume a yearly average of 20kg of plastics, from which 15.43kg/cap/year becomes waste. Insufficient recycling capacities for high value recyclables (i.e. PET, PP, HDPE) and the high volume of low value plastics (including sachets) are some factors that affect the country’s low plastic recycling rate, at 9%. The report further estimates that the Philippines leaks about 35% of plastic wastes into the environment.

With the economy slowly opening, WWF-Philippines encourages businesses to integrate plastic pollution-free practices to fight plastic pollution. Here are some useful tips for business owners on how they can participate in creating a plastic pollution-free Christmas this 2021.

Take Accountability

Businesses should acknowledge that they are accountable to the plastic pollution problem. We want businesses to assume full responsibility for products they bring to the market. It is with accepting this that taking actions comes in from reduction goal setting, adopting circular solutions, and contributing in stopping plastic waste leakage.

Provide plastic-free options to consumers

We encourage businesses to offer plastic-free options to consumers through “bring your own” scheme and having the option to refuse unnecessary plastic items. Some major fast food restaurants are already doing this and we encourage other businesses to do so. We wish that businesses be at the forefront to consumers about reducing plastic consumption.

Segregate and divert recyclable wastes

For necessary plastics, we wish businesses to segregate and divert through partnering with recyclers and social enterprises. It can sometimes get complicated with the plastic types but it is important to start using the numbers in the plastic products to help facilitate its recycling. You can partner with a local junk shop to help identify items that they can buy. There are also a number of social enterprises like Trash Panda, Plastics by Manila Automat, Plastic Flamingo, and Green Antz, among others that offer collection partnerships. You can also work with your city/ municipality to work on models to improve the current waste management system.

Share best practices and collaborate with other businesses

Collaboration is important in working towards sustainability. It is with conversing with other businesses that are doing their fair share in reducing plastic pollution that we learn which to adopt and what to improve on in our operations. We wish businesses to work together within the industry and with other industries so we all learn how to improve our current system.

Support the EPR Scheme in the Philippines

WWF-Philippines is pushing for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), an environmental policy approach introduced in the 1990s for accelerating the transition to sustainable waste management and a circular economy. We wish businesses to take responsibility and push for an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme in the country.

EPR relies on two factors - improvement of product design and recyclability and improvement of waste management systems - and businesses here in the Philippines have stepped up to the challenge, taking sustainability seriously, by working on both upstream and downstream measures to address the plastic crisis.

More and more businesses worldwide have gotten on board with EPR, and several businesses in the Philippines have also adopted the policy by working on both upstream and downstream measures to address the plastic crisis. With enough support, EPR can be a solid foundation for other businesses and even the government to adopt. It is currently gaining traction among legislators in Congress with House Bill 9147 or The Single-Use Plastic Products Regulation Act and Senate Bill 2425 or the Extended Producer Responsibility Act of 2021 which both seek to enact mandatory EPR.

As we enter the holiday season, we wish for businesses to take part in our journey towards a vision of no plastics in nature by 2030. 12/23/2021 (Bits of Rocks)

Picture Story 5: The Gifts!

What can you say on this picture? Cute...tiny...colorful...artistic...?!

I like to share with you this photo taken last December 2008. Now you have an idea?! It was taken from the workstation of my office mate. He was so thankful and really appreciates these little things!

These things were the small gifts coming from our teammates. Like what I have said, every Christmas seasons, each of my teammates gives gift to each one of us. And these were all the gifts we have received last year!

Now my question goes...could you spot which of these things was my gift to them?!

How matter how big or small your gift was, it is still the thoughts and value that count! It's important that it's all purely coming from the heart...!!! c",)

Wishing You All The Best This Season!!!

Yuletide Symbols V: "Gifts and Giving"

Seven days to go before Christmas...have you received your gifts?!

Well, Christmas won't not be complete without gifts and giving! Actually it is the gift that really put the spirit of Christmas into life!

Now on my fifth Christmas special, join me as I open my gifts to all of you! Do you have your wish list with you?

It's Nice To Be A Christmas Model!

Here is Your Gift...

Which Of These Is Mine?!

Every Christmas, everyone of us gives gifts to our love ones. If you have lots of friends, well expect for more gifts! Actually here in our office and even in my previous office, each of my teammates gives gifts to all of us during Christmas. My working area was really full of different gifts wrapped in a Christmas wrapper. In addition to this, we also received other more special gifts from our special someone! Wow!

And giving Christmas gifts varies in style. I know all of you already practiced the so called exchange gifts, monito-monita , Kris-kringle , and other more. All of us had experienced buying gift for his 'baby' or received an unexpected gift from his 'parent'! Or we find it hard to look for something hard, long,
and hairy! Ohh...!

Well, these were just some of the experiences we had during Christmas! It really hard to find the right gifts your recipient wishes! But if I were to ask, which of these Christmas gift-giving do you like best, monito-monita, kris-kringle, exchange gift, or any other more that I haven't mentioned yet!

So Many Gifts I Have Received! Thanks!

Hey, Where Is Your Gift For Me?!

Posing On The Christmas Tree!

A Cute Christmas Model!...Wow!

And another tradition for gift is that everytime we received gifts, we immediately place it under our Christmas tree. Actually the bottom of our Christmas trees were all intended as a storage for gifts! Hmmm...did you know why we put our gifts under the Christmas trees? Or do you have an idea where this tradition came from?!

For some after they received the gift, they immediately open it in front of the giver. But in my case, after I received the gift, I keep it and wait for the Christmas day to come before I open it! This is my style so that I really feel the suspense of the gift I didn't know!

And for some, they totally destroy the wrapper after opening the gift. But others open the gift so gently avoiding it to destroy specially those expensive wrapper type! In addition to this, have you heard of recycle gifts?! What's your idea about this?!

So, again feel free to share your thoughts! It's the idea that counts! Haha! And before we finally end, give another shots to all my pictures above! I let myself to be your model in this part of my Christmas special! Do you like it! I know you really love...!!!Haha! c",)

Yuletide Symbols IV: "Gold or Red Christmas?"

One week more to wait before the year's greatest celebration! Everyone of us are excited...but of course many were really, really busy!

Christmas is in the air! We can feel it, we can hear different Christmas songs, and of course, we really see it! Speaking of seeing the Christmas, it is associated with the different colors! But have you asked yourself what is really the color of Christmas?

Well, welcome to the fourth part of my Christmas special for this year! Like the previous three, here are the pictures taken from the Christmas displays in SM Mall, Makati using my digital camera mobile phone!

Gold...Red...?! Which of these two colors best represents Christmas?!

Gold Labels....

Gold Planted Around the Corner!

Building a Golden Christmas Tree...Wow!

Yup, the pictures above show how gold is associated in Christmas. Sparkling, shinny, shivering...these how gold symbolize the season.

But if there is gold, next inline with this are silver and bronze. This group represents the brightness and shinning of Christmas!

But then, there is also shinny red, blue, and green next to the first three!

Well, what can you say on the images above? Did gold really supports Christmas celebration?!

A Brittle Red Christmas!

Oh What A Red Christmas Fruits!

Red Balls...Will You Like?!

Red, Red, Red Around The Corner!

And now let's go to the most popular color of Christmas...the red!

Of course all of us were familiar with Santa Claus' robe. It is well-wrap with red color! Even his dwarfs, reindeers, and sleigh...red is the primary color!

Try to rotate your eyes on the decors around you. Red is all around when yuletide season comes! You could see red Christmas trees, red parols, a red poinsettia which is known as the flower of Christmas, red Christmas sock, red candies, etc.! Red really dominates the yuletide season!

Now if I were to ask you, which will you prefer a gold or red Christmas?! But of course I know that you are dreaming of a white Christmas just like me! Hahaha! And all of us never ever want to have a blue Christmas!

You are now free to give your points and suggestions! Red or gold...it's your choice! c",)

Happy Holidays!!!
