10 Ways to Have an Extra Special Father’s Day

When it comes to gift giving and celebrations nothing can be more difficult than preparing for a surprise for Father’s Day.  After all, what else can you give to a person who has the means to thoughtfully provide for all of your family’s needs day in and day out? Of course there’s nothing wrong with giving the ubiquitous tie, money clip or wallet but if you really want your dad to have an extra special day, then it’s time to plan activities or presents that he will truly enjoy.

1. Let him indulge in a little “me” time

Dads have some of the busiest schedules. They juggle work and family time, and are left with almost zero time for themselves. This Father’s Day, deliberately give them a day off. Keep the kids preoccupied with tasks or playthings so dad can focus on things that will make him relax and enjoy like watching his favorite game or series, uninterrupted time online, or even a quick jog outdoors.

2. Spend the day playing his favorite sport

Father’s love to share their interests with their family. Whether it’s a sport like running or football to restoring vintage cars or collecting vintage LPs, dads feel a special bond with their families when they have a shared interest. Spend the day on the field and talking shop and techniques so the entire family can improve their game. A visit to a sport shop afterwards is also a fun way to cap a tiring yet fulfilling game. Athletic dads who love football for instance, will enjoy a trip with the entire family to a specialty store like Nike Bootcamp where they can try on the latest football boots and cleats, or buy an extra pair of pro gloves and shin guards. To him, it will seem like outfitting an entire team.

3. Let him live out a dream

Let’s admit it, guys, father’s included, have a thing for driving. For dads who secretly dream of riding of into the sunset on a two-wheeled muscle machine, they can now live out their fantasy by enrolling in the Ducati Riding Experience (DRE). Drop by the Ducati shop at the Commercenter to book a class where they will be trained by Ducati Certified Instructors. Not only will they brush up on their motorcycle riding skills, dads will get a DRE kit, certificate, practical session, and of course hours of riding time on a Ducati motorcycle! Sweet! If you want to make your pop’s day even sweeter, get him an accessory or two which can serve as a memento.

4. Support his hobbies

If you’re father is more of a cyclist than a biker, a trip to Epic Cyle at the Commercenter might just be the highlight of your dad’s day. From performance footwear, helmets, handle bars and frames, the store has everything a hard core cycling enthusiast needs for a perfect ride. Be ready to while away some time as its easy to get enthralled with all that gear.

5. Give time to play with his “toys”

It wouldn’t be surprising if your dad spent considerable time tuning or jazzing up his car when he still had spare time in his hands. This Father’s Day let him spend time doing what he used to do over the weekends – taking care of his second “baby,” his car. To top it off, literally gift him with a new set of Bridgestone wheels like another set of passenger tires, new wet tires for the rainy season or a 4x4 set for off-road adventures.

6. Send him to boot camp

All father’s wear different hats. Some are even serious athletes or weekend warriors. These sporty dads now have a chance to up their game by joining a high performance sports program that can help them reach their full potential. Enroll your dad into a Sports or Performance Training Program at Focus Athletics to help him achieve his fitness goals faster. Or better yet, tag along and be his workout buddy so you can bond and encourage each other over drills and exercises.

7. Encourage him to relax, refresh and recharge

For the dad who needs rest and relaxation, a chance to unwind at the Commercenter’s Centro Holistico might just be the thing. The wellness center offers acupuncture, IV Nutrient Therapy, detox, lymphatic dry brushing and other programs that can soothe the senses.

8. Zone out with a little screen time

Who doesn’t enjoy a little screen time? With the Commercenter’s spacious and luxurious cinema, dads will surely be able to focus and lose themselves in whatever film they’re watching.

9. Let him feast like a king

After a fun-filled and eventful father’s day weekend, treat dad to steak and more steak at the Black Pig. If he’s into burgers, he can dive into the pork belly sandwich which is just as satisfying.

10. Cap off the day with a toast

To cap off the day, throw a toast to dad and tell him how much you appreciate him with a premium bottle of wine from Bacchus wines. If he’s more into hard drinks, give him a cognac or a whiskey to let him feel valued.

Throwing a memorable Father’s Day celebration doesn’t have to be that difficult. As long as each activity is centered on your dad’s enjoyment and demonstrates how much you appreciate him, it will sure be a celebration that he will treasure throughout the years. Drop by the Comercenter in Alabang this Father’s Day weekend to show your dad how much you care. 06/18/2018 (Bits of Rocks)

The Feast of San Juan Bautista

Today, June 24, we are celebrating the feast of San Juan Bautista. If I'm not mistaken, this is the day when Jesus Christ was baptized by San Juan in the river of Jordan. That's why when you get along ridding a jeepney in the City of San Juan or in Manila, you will be poured by water! Or maybe today is his birthday?! Hmmm...

Yup, this is the tradition I most remember way back again in my childhood days. I remember when I was a 5-year old kid, me, my father, and my mother went to church ridding in a jeepney. We were got wet by the people on the road as they poured water in our jeepney. We need then to change our wet clothes!

And did you also know that in this same day my mom is celebrating her birthday?! Yup, today is also the birthday of my mother! And right now she is preparing foods for us. My nephew and my aunties were already in our home today to celebrate our mom's birthday!

And besides my mom, my friend and my co-editor in our college student publication named Edlee is also celebrating his 26TH birthday today. "Pa-burger ka Pre...!" Even my look-alike actor, Mr. John Lloyd Cruz is also celebrating his birthday today!

Well, it seems that there's a lot to celebrate today! Birthdays of my mom, my friend Edlee, my look-alike actor Lloydie, and San Juan Bautista in addition to the regular holiday in the City of San Juan and Manila.

Therefore, allow me to give greetings to all of them! To my mother, Edlee, Lloydie, and San Juan Bautista...

"Happy Birthdays!" C",)

The Father's Day Story

Today we are celebrating Father's Day. Yup, today is the special day to all of our fathers.

But did you know how the celebration of Father's Day started? Well, I will share with you this story:

History of Father's Day

History of Father's Day Festival as seen today is not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work and struggle of Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Washington that just as we have set aside Mother's Day to honor mothers we have a day to acknowledge the important role played by the father. However, some scholars opine that Father's Day history is much older than we actually believe it to be. They say that the custom of honoring dad's on a special day is over 4,000 years old. There are a few more claims about the Father's Day origin about which we will learn in this page.

Earliest History of Father's Day

Scholars believe that the origin of Father's Day is not a latest phenomenon, as many believe it to be. Rather they claim that the tradition of Father's Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon. They have recorded that a young boy called Elmesu carved a Father's Day message on a card made out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago. Elmesu wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life. Though there is no record of what happened to Elmesu and his father but the tradition of celebrating Father's Day remained in several countries all over the world.

History of Father's Day in US

Modern version of Father's Day celebration originated in United States of America and thereafter the tradition spread in countries around the world. The world owes thanks to Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd a loving daughter from Spokane, Washington as it is because of her struggle that Father's Day saw the light of the day.

The idea of Father's Day celebration originated in Sonora's mind when she per chance listened to Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Fairly mature at the age 27, Sonora pondered if there is a day to honor mother then why not for father? Sonora felt strongly for fathers because of the affection she received from her own father Mr William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran. Sonora's mother died while childbirth when she was just 16. Mr Smart raised the newborn and five other children with love and care.

Inspired by Ms Anna Jarvis's struggle to promote Mother's Day, Ms Dodd began a rigorous campaign to celebrate Father's Day in US. The Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) supported Sonora's cause. As a result Spokane celebrated its first Father's Day on June 19, 1910. Though there was initial hesitation the idea gained gradual popularity all over US and Fathers Day came to be celebrated in cities across the country.

Looking at the heightened popularity of Father's Day in US, President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea of a national Father's Day in 1924 to, "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations". After a protracted struggle of over four decades, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day in 1966. Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Sonora Smart Dodd was honored for her contribution at the World's Fair in Spokane in 1974. Mrs. Dodd died in 1978 at age 96.

Present Day Celebrations

Father's Day Festival has gained amazing popularity over the years. The festival is considered to be a secular one and is celebrated not just in US but in a large number of countries around the world including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Norway and India though on different dates. World over people take Father's Day as an opportunity to thank father and pay tribute to them. On this day children present Father's Day cards not just to their dads but also grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers or any other person who commands the position of a father in their life. There is also a trend to present Father's Day gift to dad, most popular of all being necktie. Other popular gift being roses, the official Father's Day flower. Many people rue that the trend of presenting gifts to fathers has led to over commercialization of the festival relegating the noble idea behind Father's Day celebration.

A Star Will Be Born!

One day to go...or twelve more hours before the birth of the star! Today is March 18, 2010 and exactly 12:24 PM. Tomorrow will be the day...the day for another annual celebration every March 19!

Yup, tomorrow is my birthday! Another year was again added to my age. Hmmmm...can you guess what will be my age tomorrow? =)

Tomorrow will be my third times to celebrate my birthday here in our company. The very first time I celebrate my birthday here in our office was in 2008. I was night shift there and yeah, I brought foods for them! Then in 2008, the second time, I was in a day shift. One of my close friend here in our office gave me a nice gift, the mini-statue of Saint Joseph!

Tomorrow, what will it be?!

Well, we're gonna catch it tomorrow. I'm clueless by now! The star was not yet born by this day. That's why in the image above, you see that a form of me is yet to complete! And eventually you will see a good looking guy in the person of Rocky...!!! c",)

Picture Story 7: Chinese New Year Tree

Yesterday afternoon, walking around in SM Valenzuela to make a balance inquiry in my account, I saw this thing and it attracts me:

I don't exactly know what this thing is? I don't know how we can call this? But one thing I'm sure, it's a Chinese thing!

Yup, since we will celebrate Chinese New Year this coming Sunday, the purpose of this thing is for the celebration!

How can we call this thing? Is it a Chinese New Year Tree or a Chinese Christmas Tree? Which of the two better fits the name of this red Chinese thing?

And looking in that tree, for me it symbolizes fortune and prosperity for the coming of the new year! If I'm not mistaken, it is all intended for a good luck and for a lucky charm!

So, before we all say Kung Hei Fat Choi, let us give this thing a better name! See yah! c",)

Two Years in My Company!

My Very First Picture Here in My Company

February 11, 2008
- It was exactly two years from now since I was hired here in my third job! So many things were happened! Many good memories were now printed in my own history. I have been with the different people and friends here. Some of them were still here, some already moved-on to pursue another career!

So, as part of my second year anniversary here in my company in this same date, join me as we go back in time two years ago! Here are some of my picture memories taken during my early days here in the company:

My First Day @ Work...

The Pantry on My Early Days!

I was hired on the first week of February, 2008. Initial interviews, exams, then final interview and medical exam happened on this week. Then my first day started on February 11, 2008! Actually, I started Tuesday instead of Monday since they only had a 4-day per week work. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday were their offs!

I started to work in a very plain working station with a CRT PC just like what you seen in the pictures!

Actually in the pictures were my former team members. Majority of them, I think 6 members were already in the different company! My manager who hired me will also leave her new team as well as our company by the end of this month since she will go abroad!

Look at me in the pictures, I was so thin and really, really looked young! I really looked like a teenage boy that time! =)

The Night of My Birthday Blowout...!!!

My First Teammates...Missing Them!

Though happened in March 19, 2008, one of my most memorable experience here was my first birthday here! Yeah, just like what you have seen, I spent my first birthday here on my first month. I was also in a nightshift that time. I brought lots of foods to all my teammates like Spaghetti, Salad, loaf of bread and Ube Halaya!

My officemates really loved my foods. They even asked for more!

This was our first office located in the 35TH Floor! That was really memorable to me specially the pantry wherein you could see the tops of the other building! It was really a relaxing place every time you eat there!

Of course, I also missed my former first working station. Though plain and simple, many good things and memories were left there!

But most of all, I truly missed my former teammates who then became part of my corporate life! The friendship and camaraderie we had were meaningful! Our communications were now only in the internet!

Hayz...really missing those days! Two years had passed! For two years of my stay here in my company, I really grow and improved not only physically and financially but also in terms of career, skills, camaraderie, and memories! I was then so thankful...!!! c",)
