Feel the Fight and Romance in the Highest Grossing Chinese Film "Never Say Die"

The Chinese New Year (CNY) is fast-approaching. And just like most of you, a Chinoy blogger and vlogger like me is preparing for this tradition. Yes, it is always my tradition here in my personal blog Bits of Rocks to celebrate the Chinese tradition with you via featuring Chinese-themed posts. On the previous years, I already featured Chinese horoscope, beliefs, holiday treats, and fun stuffs which definitely captured your attention.

This year, let's take the entertainment side (since entertainment is also one of my fortes). Have you already planned for a date with your love one watching a romcom Chinese movie?

Before KPOP domination here in the Philippines, Chinese movies were considered crowd favorites in the foreign film entertainment scene especially with themes leaning toward romcom, action and supernatural.  Another instance was during the height of the Mexican telenovela in the country in the early 2000, Chinese series Meteor Garden starring F4 was such a big hit on Television.

Chinese movie followers or even those who crave for fresh films are in for a hilarious treat as the recent blockbuster top grosser in China and Hong Kong over the recent months will now be shown in the country. Never Say Die will leave you excited all throughout the film and will have you laughing your heart out as Ai Lun (Edison) and Ma Li (Xiao Xiao) bring you a mixture of all the elements you love in a Chinese film; Action, RomCom and Supernatural all in one movie. The film is the highest-grossing in China in 2017 with a whopping US$334 million recorded in the box office.

The Official Movie Poster of Never Say Die

Never Say Die surpassed the US$250 million earned by Jackie Chan’s film Kung Fu Yoga last year, to become the biggest single-territory grosser among all live-action comedies ever released.

Here is a one-minute trailer of the said film:

Never Say Die is a movie about a has-been Ultimate Fighting King (UFK) boxer who can’t seem to get a good fight and a celebrity Journalist who is caught it in a bad romance and how destiny allowed them to straighten their acts as they switch bodies and embark in a series of misadventures to fix their intertwined predicament.

This is such an interesting film bringing back the F4 and Meteor Garden feels! Agree?! 02/06/2018 (Bits of Rocks)

Quick Review: 'The Amazing Spider Man 2'

I am really an avid fan of the "Spiderman" movies specially when the Hollywood hunk heartthrob Andrew Garfield took the lead role! In 2012, I was amazed with the first sequel of the movie dubbed as "The Amazing Spider-Man" which also served as our reunion with my college 'ka-loveteam.'

Two years later, here we go again with another "Spiderman" movie. But this time with a new partner!  And this movie will be my first entry to my new segment here in my blog called "Quick Review."

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is more action-packed and more realistic than the first part. It is more action-packed in a way that they introduced two to three villains in the movie with different superpowers which put the life of Spiderman at risk! And yes, it is more realistic because the movie let the girlfriend of Spidey (played by Emma Stone) died. But of course she died with a worth, she sacrificed her life to save the only man she loves who is Peter Parker.

The movie also puts in realization that even though you're a superhero, you are still human who get hurt and challenged by the usual human fate.

Here is the full trailer of the movie:

For me this movie tops my first list of best film for 2014 so far. No wonder why Spidey tops the highest-grossing film in the country for 2014!

My rating for the movie with the scale of 1-5 with 5 as the highest will be 5/5. Yes, a perfect score of 5 stars!

I can't wait and see its third part! (RCB)

Movie Review: 'Bride for Rent' Combines Romance, 'Kilig,' and Family Values!

"Isn't it Exciting?" ... Yes it's exciting!
"Isn't it Amazing?" ... Yes it's amazing!
"Isn't  it Surprising?" ... Yes it's surprising!

Kim Chiu and Xian Lim created another record, this time in the blockbuster hit! Their movie "Bride for Rent" is undeniably one of the greatest movies Star Cinema had produced. And yes, this rom-com film is another candidate to be the next highest grossing Pinoy movie of all time!

I got curious why this movie received many positive feedback from the viewers and from the netizens. So, I decided to watch the film and found the reasons why.

At first, I thought that this movie is another ordinary romance-comedy flick that only aims to spread 'kilig' to the audience. But definitely, it's not! One of the noticeably good features of this movie is that, it is full of family values and moral lessons!

First, it emphasized the importance of marriage. In our current generation, we are exposed to the different movies and TV series tackling 'kabit,'  mistress, or third party. But this film broke the trends! It gave inspiration to married couples and inspired the future grooms and brides to the importance of marriage vows. I love the part how the film inserted interviews of real-life couples sharing inspirational stories about their weddings!

Second, it paid attention to the importance of family in our lives. Kim and Xian who were playing Rocky and Rocco in the film came from two different families with two different statues. Rocky was the breadwinner of their family. She didn't afraid to take different challenges just to help her family. On the other way around, Rocco is raised as a rich kid. But even though he's full of wealth, he's unhappy because of his issue with his father (played by Tirso Cruz III). But in the end, Rocco resolved the conflict with his father and open a happy relationship with him.

The love team KimXi once more didn't failed us to give different 'kilig' moments. Kim and Xian compromise one another. They were truly a perfect match in the movie. Watching them together in this film seems like watching an Asianovela. The complete ingredients everyone is looking for in our favorite Koreanovela were all there in the tandem of Kim Chiu and Xian Lim!

Here is the full trailer of "Bride for Rent:"

My favorite part in this movie is the scene where Rocky fantasized that Rocco is kissing her. While Rocky is instructing Rocco to do more household chores in the kitchen, Rocco came wet and hot looking at her (while the movie's theme song "Chinito" was playing as the background music) then kissed her! "Sobrang nakakakilig ang eksenang iyon!"

In terms of acting, I can say that Kim is "lalong gumagaling!" She is perfect and a very good actress in playing 'kwela' roles. "Magaan panuorin, hindi masyadong madrama!" But of course she can play heavy drama as well as proven by her previous movies and TV series. On the other hand, Xian is too hot to handle in this movie. He can effectively portray his spoiled-brad character in the story. I love how he dressed up in this film!

What captivates my heart in this movie?! Well, its theme song! The song "Chinito" popularized by Ms, Yeng Constantino which is the movie's OST is also my theme song of my current love life! "Kaya relate much ako dito" adding the fact that Kim's character as Rocky is also my real name! "Saan ka pa!"

Here is the cool music video of "Chinito" with romantic clips from the movie:

Some of the memorable lines from this movie which registered in my mind are the following:

"The Person You Love Most is the Person Who Hurts You Most"
 - Lala (Pilita Corales)

"You Are a Good Person if You Can Say Sorry..."
- Rocky (Kim Chiu)

After watching this movie, it feels like "gusto ko na ring mag-asawa!" I love the story, I love the plot, I love the values, I love the characters, I love the theme song...ang galing ng Star Cinema! Kudos!

Ms. Mae Czarina Cruz, the director of the movies like "24/7 in Love" and "She's the One" is also the lady behind this film! Congrat direk for another successful movie! Looking forward for your new masterpiece as well as KimXi's third movie together! Two thumbs up guys! (RCB)

Movie Review: 'Girl Boy Bakla Tomboy' Proves Vice Ganda's Versatility!

And the fourth 39TH Metro Manila Film  Festival (MMFF) 2013 movie that we watched is no other than the Star Cinema and Vice Ganda's starrer, the comedy film "Boy Girl Bakla Tomboy!"

Well, the reasons why I decided to watch the said movie is first, to see how Vice Ganda portray the four different characters with four genders; second, to see why it was defeated by "My Little Bossings," and third, to compare this movie against his last year's top-grossing "Sisterakas!"

What I love most about this movie is the talent of Vice Ganda to portray four different roles with four different genders! In the movie, Vice's characters were quadruplet! He was able to give life to the girl named Girlie, to the boy Peter, to the gay Mark, and to the tomboy Panying! Even though the four characters were played by only one actor, we can easily distinguish one from another! "Hindi mo masasabing si Vice lang mag-isa ang gumaganap ng isang role!" For me, of the four characters, I love the girl and the tomboy! Yes, "ang galing-galing gumanap ni Vice na girl at tomboy!" "Sa bakla normal lang  kase niya 'un, 'ung boy medyo pilit pa at di ako convinced." But the girl and the tomboy characters, perfect! Vice played them very well!

Yes I admit, I love to watch a movie or TV series with dual or triple roles! That's why I love the teleserye of Claudine Barretto before which was "Saan Ka Man Naroroon" (1999) where she played the triplet Rosario, Rosenda, and Rosemarie; the TV series of Lorna Tolentino before which was "Kaytagal Kang Hinintay" (2002) where she played the twin Lorea and Lorinda; and the Coco Martin's hit action-drama serye "Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin" (2011) where he portrayed the twins Javier and Alexander! "Tamo kabisado ko pa! Hahaha!" And yes, if I was given a chance to play a character in a movie or in a TV series, I want the dual role, the twin where one is bida  and the other is kontrabida like what Coco Martin played in his teleserye!

The movie is also full of fun! You will laugh in every scene of Vice Ganda! Very natural the way he cracked jokes! It seems like you're watching "It's Showtime" and "Gandang Gabi Vice!" The movie has a touch of live comedy!

Here is the full trailer of the movie:

I also love the theme song of the movie! It's "Whoops Kirri" which is revived by Vice Ganda himself! "Ang kulit lang!"

Here is the music video of their movie's theme song. The music video will truly give us a four-times of laughter!

I also observed that Vice's four characters were inspired by four different celebrities. The girl depicts Ruffa Gutierrez,  the boy is the K-Pop G-Dragon,  the gay definitely is no other than himself, and the tomboy is either Charice or Aiza Seguerra! Agree?!

The story also have a simple plot just like "My Little Bossings." "No kidnappan, no barilan," unlike the traditional Pinoy comedy films we used to grew up with!

It is also family-centered. In a way, we can get moral values in the story - the essence of close family ties! Whatever happens, your family will always be your family! "Kayo-kayo din ang magtutulungan sa huli"  Acceptance ruled!

The negative side of the film, first, some of the casts seemed like 'wall flowers,' useless, no gravity, sayang! Just like the characters of Cristine Reyes, JC De Vera,  and Ejay Falcon. Though we all know that they were already big stars, they look like supporting casts, or better say, "nagmukhang 'in special participation' lang sila sa movie! Lack of significant roles in the movie. What more, the love team of Bobby Andrews  and Angelu De Leon, "nagmukhang pang-display!" They may play better roles in the movie if given a chance! "Sayang ang hit love team 'nung 90's  na hinintay ng mga tao"  for a reunion movie! The worst is, "bakla pa ata 'ung role ni Bobby sa movie di pa na-emphasize ng maayos!" Maybe it's better to see that Bobby and Mark, the gay character of Vice were close friends. "Un bang bestfriend sila, magka-amiga"  since thy both gay! Or should be better if Bobby is the sidekick of the gay Vice to add more impact!

And the second thing is, "parang may kulang sa movie. Na parang may hinahanap ka pa." Not that fully satisfied although I love the happy ending in the finale! "Tsaka bakit ganun, tinanggal 'ung nunal ni Girlie sa middle part?!" "Sayang di tuloy naging makatotohanan! 'Un pa naman nagdala sa girl version ni Vice!" Too much of practical jokes in that part loosen the story!

Well if they ironed out those negative sides of the film, maybe "Girl Boy Bakla Tomboy" is No. 1 in the top-grossing race defeating Vic Sottos's "My Little Bossings!" And it will definitely surpass the success of Vice's last year's film "Sisterakas!" What do you think?!

But overall, this movie is 100% fun. It you wan to relax, laugh, and feel stress free, definitely you should watch the movie! The credit is still for Vice for effectively giving us four different characters! Two thumbs up Vice Ganda! "Ang galing mo!" (RCB)

Movie Review: 'My Little Bossings' is More on Drama than Comedy!

"My Little Bossings," one of the comedy movie entries to the 39TH Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2013 which stars Vic Sotto, Kris Aquino, Aiza Sequerra, Ryzza Mae Dizon,  and Baby James 'Bimby' Yap  is this year's No. 1 MMFF box-office film breaking the last year's dominant "Sisterakas" of Vice Ganda, Kris Aquino, and  Ai Ai Delas Alas.

I've watched the film to find out why it conquers the box-office gross though I got bored watching the trailers of the movie shown on TV and on the internet.

The first thing I found out in this movie, it's more on drama than comedy! Say, it is made of 90% drama and 10% comedy. There's a lot of drama scenes of Vic and Aiza on the movie. Even the scenes of Kris and Bimby were mostly drama and teary! The two kids Ryzza and Bimby as well as Vic and his movie sidekicks  Jose Manalo and Paolo Ballesteros handled the comedy part tickling the audience! But still, drama prevailed in the totally of the movie!

The movie is truly a family-oriented! It's perfect not only for the kids but to the whole family as well! It teaches us the importance of the family - your mother, father, and children. It shows how the parents can give everything, can sacrifice even their happiness just for their kids. This part is clearly depicted in the story of Vic and Aiza who is playing the father and daughter with a conflict; of Aiza and Ryzza who is also a mother and daughter in the film with a dark past; and of Kris and Bimby  who were not only mother and son in real life but also in the movie who will solve a threat in their lives.

The story's plot is simple. The focus is really the two kids. Just like Vic said, "walang kidnapan, walang barilan" like we always see in the traditional Pinoy comedy films. It just deals with simple conflict.

Check out the full trailer of the film below:

Well if there's missing in the movie, "kung saan ako nakukulangan," it's definitely in the comedy aspect. Maybe we can categorize this film as a drama rather than a comedy. Or should I say, a drama with a touch of comedy!

The story flow is also indeed smooth. The later part of the movie explains why Vic and Aiza's relationship is rough, why Aiza took care of Ryza, and why Vic cannot hardly accept the dead of his wife!

But the negative aspect of this movie, this is the movie with lots of endorsements! "Para akong nanunood ng isang sine ng TV commercials!" Almost every scene there is a brand promoted! A brand of soap, detergent, pasta, pancit canton, medicine, bakery, tuna, tocino, celphone, and everything in the movie were composed of endorsements! "Buti sana kung ipapakita lang saglit ung pangalan ng brand,"  but they even have dialogues and certain stars acting on it!

Kris Aquino also took a very small part in the movie. Her character seems like a supporting role note that her name and Vic's were emphasized in the billing! Hmm...maybe that's the reason why her picture was not included in the movie poster?!

In terms of acting, I give the credits to Ms. Jacklyn Jose! She can do both villain and comediane character! She reminded me of her character as Dona Charito in GMA-7's teleserye "Mundo Mo'y Akin!" On the other hand, I also commend the acting skills of Aiza in the movie. She's good in drama and "kaya niyang magpa-iyak ng audience!"

And of course, the stars related to Bossing Vic Sotto were also seen in the movie. Some of them were his rumored girlfriend Pauleen Luna; his real-life son Oyo Boy Sotto;  his nephew, the son of Tito Sotto; and his besfriend Joey De Leon!  We will be surprised if we see Wally Bayola in the movie! Hahaha!

Overall, the movie is indeed good. Perfect for the kids, perfect for the whole family! The family values depicted in the movie prevailed! (RCB)

Moview Review: 'Pagpag Siyam na Buhay' is an Extreme Horror Flick with a Twist!

I've just completed watching 4 of the mainstream movie entries in the 39TH Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2013. These include, "Boy Golden: The Arturo Porcuna Story," "Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay," "My Little Bossings,"  and "Girl Boy Bakla Tomboy." And of course, I even watched one of the new wave movie entries, the action film "Saka Saka." And yes, I will share with you my movie reviews for each of these movies. I already completed the review for "Boy Golden."

Of the said five movies that I have watched for the year, "Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay" is the No. 1 on my list! Aside from the fact that I'm a lover and a big fan of horror movies, there are certain things in the movie which made it as my No. 1 favorite!

First of all, the story is not predictable! There is a twist and mystery in the story that made the audience hook! "Yun bang, aabangan mo ang bawat eksena at hihintayin mo ang susunod na mangyayari!" Although you know that each of them will die, there is still a question in your mind if how the tragedy could be stopped!

Second, this movie really gives you an extreme horror experience! Yes, "sobrang nakakagulat at nakaka-kaba ang mga eksena" specially when they involved the Filipino tradition of "patay" and "lamay."  "Takot pa naman ako sa mga patay at sa mga lamay"  so this movie gave me an nth level of frightening experience! "Umpisa pa lang nakakatakot na"  when the movie started during the wake of the dead Enchong Dee who committed suicide. His girlfriend Empress violated some of the beliefs by wearing red in the wake and not practicing "Pagpag" therefore the ghost of Enchong followed and terrorized her!

Third, I love the twist and the way how they relate the Filipino beliefs and superstitions to the horror story. It was clearly depicted in the movie, "kung ano 'ung nilabag na pamahiin, dun namamatay 'ung lumabag." For instance the character of Miles Ocampo who look at her face on her mirror during the lamay, she died also on the mirror - "nabubog at natusok ng malaki niyang salamin sa kwarto" at the same time, a big chandelier felt on her! Also the character of CJ Navato who stole food, the sandwich on the lamay, he died via 'sandwiched' by two vehicles! Another one,  the character of Michelle Vito who cried on the coffin of the dead, she died by means of water! It is similar to the character of Dom Roque who wiped the tears of Michelle in the coffin therefore he died also in the shower room by means of water and glass!

Check out the full trailer of "Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay" below and see those things that I've mentioned:

Aside from that, the main characters of the story showed a great acting skills! Paulo Avelino's acting here as a ghost killer is superb! He is my bet for the Best Supporting Actor award. And yes, he didn't failed the expectations of audience here in the movie by giving his best in terms of acting! He reminded me of his character as Nathan in "Walang Hanggan!"

Of course, Shaina Magdayao who is playing the wife of Paulo is also great in acting in the movie. She revealed a 'bida-kontrabida' character in the story!

Kathryn Bernardo, the lead actress in the movie who is portraying Leni also didn't left behind! "Di rin nagpatalo sa aktingan ang Teen Queen of Philippine showbiz!"  She can do both drama and horror at the same time! You can really feel her swing of emotions in the movie!

And of course, I love the lead child star Clarence Delgado in the movie! He is playing Macmac, the cute abandoned child and the unknown son of Paulo and Shaina. His ka-cutan and his power to see the next tragedy even though he can't speak captured the hearts of the viewers!

The movie's target audience were teenagers, youngsters, and young at heart that's why the story revolves around the group of teenagers! But of course, they were able to combine the needs and expectations of the older viewers.

And two of the downfalls, the negative sides of this movie was first, they continue the tradition of serial killings with a pattern which reminded us of "Feng Shui," "Sukob,"  and "The Healing."  And second, I can't accept the part of the movie wherein they bring a new life to the dead people. "Nabuhay 'ung patay at bumalik na parang normal na tao lang!"  This is when the characters of Macmac and Paulo, the former dead were given new life and retain as normal people! And what is the connection of the characters of Enchong and Empress who appeared in the first part of the movie to the story of Kathryn, Daniel, Paulo, and Shaina?! It wasn't revealed in the end! These were just some of the improvements of this film but overall, this movie is one of the best!

Once more, congratulations Star Cinema, Paulo Avelino, Kathryn Bernardo, Clarence Delgado, Matet De Leon,  and to all the people behind this film for giving us another remarkable horror movie like this! Two thumbs up "Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay!" It's my No. 1 MMFF movie for 2013! (RCB)

Movie Review: "Boy Golden The Arturo Porcuna Story" Gives a New Life to Phil. Action Film!

Laguna Governor E.R. Ejercito / Jeorge Estregan made his third movie as an official entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival. After "Asiong Salonga" (2011) and "El Presidente" (2012), here comes "Boy Golden: The Arturo Porcuna Story" (2013). On the said film, he is paired to KC Concepcion

I was the one who was given the privilege (together with my date) to watch the premiere night of the said film last December in SM Mall of Asia together with the whole casts of the movie. The premiere night was truly a jam-packed! Even the sides of the cinema was full of viewers!

The movie combines the action, drama, comedy, and even suspense! It has the suspense and tragic aspect when the movie showed the harsh killing of Boy Golden to his enemies, Very brutal, very deadly!

I can say that "Boy Golden" was one of the best movies I've watched during the 39TH MMFF. It uplifted the quality of Philippine movies. Watching the movie seemed like watching a Hollywood action flick! The action was not the typical action scenes we used to watched in the traditional Pinoy action flick. It has the sense of arts and emotion!

I even love the cinematography of the movie. It has the so-called state of the art when the film gave the viewers a feel of the classic old school era. It matched the story, it matched the situation. I like the part of KC's rape scene when the cinematography turned black and white leaving only KC's lips in red!

In terms of acting, KC Concepcion is truly a revelation! Yes, "sobrang galing ni KC dito!" I was amazed that she can do action and drama at the same time! Her fight scenes were superb! I love the action scene of KC when she fought a lady in the gambling house! The effects and the fight scene seemed like an Asian action film! And "kayang makipagsabayan ni KC rito kay E.R."  knowing the fact that they have an age gap. They fit one another! I wonder why KC didn't won the Best Actress award! She deserves the title! I agree with E.R. together with the other viewers that KC should win the award!

E.R.'s acting on the other hand is also exceptional. Once more, he portrayed another interesting character apart from the previous characters he played on his first two movies. He combined action and humor in the movie! "Ang lakas ng dating ni E.R dito!

Here is the full trailer of "Boy Golden." Let's watch this and see why this movie is one of my bet in the film fest:

I wonder why this movie didn't received any awards except for the Best Float?! Why oh why?! I even bet that this one could also get the Best Picture trophy! But the awards night failed my expectations!

The movie once more relived and revived the action movie in the Philippine cinema industry. "Binuhay nito ang dating genre ng mga aksyon na pelikula na napabayaan na." It can even a best entry to Cannes or any other International movie festivals.

Well, if this movie didn't make it in the MMFF, definitely in the other award-giving bodies, it's a big winner. For me, it's truly a big hit! The story plot is not boring, it's not predictable! The totally of the movie and KC Concepcion's acting were truly commendable! I was not a fan of KC before but after watching this film, I became a big fan admiring her acting skills! "Talagang napahanga at napa-wow niya ako!"

Truly, this film  is a two thumbs up! Another great job for E.R. Ejercito for bringing another good film in the movie festival! Looking for more this year and in the coming years! (RCB)
