Tips for Economical Cooking at Home

One of the best things that came about during the lockdown is the onslaught of online cooking videos found across all social media platforms. More and more people are honing their culinary skills by experimenting and trying out new recipes in the kitchen. While this is great, it’s always good to keep a few important things in mind, most especially conserving energy and avoiding food waste when preparing meals for the family.

Here are some useful tips from  Solane, one of the country’s leading LPG solutions provider, on saving energy, time and ingredients in the kitchen:

Get your ingredients ready. Some people tend to prepare the ingredients in the middle of the cooking session while the cooking gas is on. Not only is this a waste of time but also an unnecessary waste of gas. Be sure to prepare all the ingredients ahead of cooking time and put them within your reach as you cook. That way, you don’t need to run around the kitchen to hunt for ingredients, making your cooking time shorter. This will also help you  save cooking gas.

Defrost before cooking. Some of us are probably using our microwave to defrost our frozen food. Doing this consumes a lot of electricity, when our aim is to save money on our bills. Instead of using a microwave, take out frozen ingredients ahead of cooking time, place them on the counter and thaw at room temperature.

Use low heat as much as possible. If you’re cooking or tenderizing meat by boiling, make sure to cover the pot with the lid and lower the heat as soon as it starts to boil. Leave it simmering until soft and tender. You are making the most of your cooking fuel by doing this.

Choose your burner. The bigger the burner, the more energy or cooking gas is used. When you’re using a small pan to cook, use a smaller burner. But If you have only one burner or your burners are of the same size, turn down the flame as soon as food starts to boil to maximize cooking gas.

Keep your LPG well-maintained. Keep your household safe by turning off the LPG cylinder valves when not in use. Do a regular maintenance check on your stove and LPG tank such as checking if your burners, regulators and hose are clean and functioning well and that the LPG tank is in good working condition. Regular inspection of your stove and  LPG is a good safety and energy-saving practice.

Cooking at home is great but remember to be practical and smart about it. Save your time, money and maximize your cooking gas by following these easy hacks from Solane. For more information, visit www.solane.com.ph. 06/05/2020 (Bits of Rocks)

Let's Go Green: Yorme Isko Moreno Returns to the Place Where He Started

Mayor ISKO MORENO threaded an impoverished area in Manila while growing up.  As the elected City Mayor of Manila, more popularly known to Filipinos as Yorme, he never wavered amidst adversities hurled at him for taking several steps in making a better version of the city he fondly calls his home and crowning glory. Bold and fearless, Yorme puts his heart and mind in anything he does - “Believe in yourself! You’ve got nothing to lose.”

Yorme recently signed Ordinance 8607 declaring the permanence of Arroceros Forest Park dubbed as the “Last lung of the City”, home to 61 tree varieties and 8,000 ornamental plants. The new ordinance forbids the cutting of trees and dumping of waste within the park. Part of his plan is to allocate P1 million solely for its preservation and maintenance away from urbanization and all these efforts stem from his greater plan to make Manila a “Green City”.

Yorme firmly believes in the power of nature. It’s no secret that he advocates on using natural products. No wonder, early this year Yorme became the newest brand ambassador of NOVUHAIR, Nature’s Answer to Hair Loss. Watch the full video at https://youtu.be/udvLJKXesYE

Early Holiday Surprises for RedDoorz Guests to Enjoy Family-Friends Bonding

The air is cooler, the nights are longer. Colored lights flicker in every place you see. Everybody’s easing into a holiday mood and RedDoorz advanced the holiday vibes with surprises for their hotel guests and target market.

In late October, RedDoorz surprised hotel guests nationwide in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao with #RedDoorzKeyMoments. Randomly selected guests were gifted with RedDoorz “keys” as they registered at the front desk of RedDoorz properties in different key cities. The “key” entitled them to one more free stay at selected RedDoorz properties nationwide anytime until November so they can bond and share new memories with family and friends.

Guests loved the special touch that allowed them to share more special times with their chosen companions – from Lolo and Lola to Best Buddy to to Big Bro and Little Sis, to Mom and Dad and the barkada. “This will definitely come in handy when my brother comes back for home leave this month,” said Jennylyn Casitas, whose brother works in Bahrain.

RedDoorz uncorked even more surprises. At the Fablacion Street Party held on Halloween Night at Dulo MNL in Makati, RedDoorz activated its #RedDoorzFunMoments. RedDoorz brand ambassadors went around the party venue to present party goers with more RedDoorz “keys”. Revelers who sported the Most Unique Theme, Best Make-up, Best Joker look, Best Avenger, Best Animé, Best Celebrity Lookalike, Best Drag Queen, Best Maleficent or Disney Character and the Best Family Group were singled out and awarded the surprise “keys” that would let them experience more fun times with their special people.

“At this time of year, everybody is in a holiday mood. It’s time to bond, hold reunions, do impromptu get-togethers and plan for what the family, the barkada and special friends will do together. RedDoorz joins the celebration by providing people with more ways to bond and create more key and fun moments. We have prepared fun activities and promos to enable more and more people to enjoy short or long trips anywhere in the Philippines where our over 200 properties are located,”                  ssaid Raenald De Jesus, RedDoorz Country Marketing Manager.

Tips and Tricks to Prepare a Healthy Christmas Party

Christmas is the holiday closest to our hearts. It is the event wherein we deem it the time of joy and warmth. After all, Christmas season stands for having merry with our loved ones.  By tradition, we celebrate Christmas by having get-togethers with the family for party celebrations. And by of these party celebrations, we create lasting memories that instills deep in our hearts.

As Christmas draws nearer and the party planning sets to happen, Beko Philippines, Europe’s leading brand of home appliances, listed five simple tips and tricks to help you prepare a memorable and fun party while promoting health and wellness for the family.

Shop early to beat the rush

Going to the stores as early as now can liberate you from the tights and cramps of the holiday rush. The items that you’ll need for your party may also be cheaper and still available as compared when you’ll buy them days before Christmas. Remember that early is ease and, late is stress.

Hoist the tree early

Decorating for Christmas as soon as possible can make a huge help in planning for your desired party. It can make you happy, free you the burden of haste and open you up with creative ideas. So, as early as now, bring in the holiday spirit, deck the halls, and put up the Christmas tree.

Budget the spend

Christmas giving is not about amounting to the expensive items.  For starters set only a price you can spend and list the things you need to buy for the people you’ll gift. By doing so, you can avoid impulsive buying, mental anxiety, and save up some cash when the merry season ends.

Fuel the fun with food

An ingredient of a great party is good food. It keeps the party alive and well as people wouldn’t be participating in they’re hungry. Vegetables, legumes, fruits bread cereal, rice, pasta, lean meats, kinds of seafood, milk yogurt, and natural cheese are your go-to healthy ingredients to a party without the panic for the menus are organic.

Make the party heathy binges

Make sure that the party food binges are healthy. Keep away from serving artificial or ready-made foods that are either too fatty, sugary, and oily. The menu should be with the organics of the lean and green for the Christmas party’s essence is to celebrate, not to gain weight.

Utilize the right appliances

The holidays can be a real tasking, so the appliances you use should help maximize efficiency and productivity in preparing dishes for your party. Using it shouldn’t tire you and instead, free you from worries.

When cooking, the right cookers can provide a significant aid, especially when it comes to doing multiple dishes. Thankfully, some cookers now come with features to address this problem.

This is a perfect timing to get a new cooker as Beko is launching this Christmas Season a freestanding cooker FVR62630DXDTL with Split&Cook® technology. This technology splits the oven in two, allowing you to cook two different dishes at the same time, at two different temperatures; by removing the divider the user can take advantage of the huge single oven capacity too.  Beko also offers a wide range of freestanding and built-in cooking products that It lets you cook freely for all different healthy tastes for your family’s healthy celebration needs.

For a bigger fresh storage space Beko’s innovative refrigerator such as the GN162123P side by side refrigerator has features such as the NeoFrost™ technology that provides balanced circulation of cooling and a separate airflow to avoid cross contamination.  Active Fresh blue light that helps fruits and veggies continue photosynthesizing thus, protecting vitamin C intensity and its flavor and.  It also comes with an Ion Guard to eliminate unwanted odors by circulating negative ions to neutralize bacteria and particles that causes bad odor inside the refrigerator.

Revisiting the Culinary Treasures of Luzon

From the savory sisig to the spicy Bicol Express, Luzon is a trove filled with culinary treasures. Hence, six chefs from the island group were able to explore the gastronomic delights of their hometowns through Solane Kitchen Hero: Chefs' Edition, a nationwide cooking competition which aims to recognize a new generation of local talented chefs.

These chefs simply revisited their roots and took inspiration from their provinces’ staple to create their winning masterpieces. Now, all of them are a step closer to winning the grand prizes at the national round which are P100,000 cash and a culinary trip to Japan.

Smoked duck and arroz valenciana arancini with sampaloc sauce and spicy apple chutney

Dinakdakan with ensalada, roasted shallots, and candied calamansi

A unique twist on Igado was rustled up by Chef Xavier Mercado during the Ilocos leg. Igado is a famous Ilocano stew made of pork and liver braised in soy sauce-vinegar mixture and Mercado decided to amp up his version of the traditional dish by adding local fruits such as guava and grapes.

Another famous Ilocano dish, Dinakdakan, helped Chef Jan Daryl Doculan from Nueva Vizcaya prevail in his regional competition. A dish traditionally made of pig ears, head, brain, and vegetables, Doculan’s Dinakdakan was served with assorted achara, ensalada, toasted shallot, and candied calamansi.

Igadobas Ti La Union

Smoked Duck Arroz Valenciana Arancini was the star of the competition during the regional leg in Central Luzon. Chef Marlon Manuel from Nueva Ecija wowed the judges with his dish which he served with Sampaloc Sauce and Spicy Apple Chutney for added flavor.

Bistek, a Filipino favorite, was prepared by Chef Roberto Roldan Jr. during the fourth leg. Roldan improved Bistek’s salty and savory flavors with herbs and cashews, a puree of squash, green pea coulis, sago and calamansi kropek, and crispy shallots.

A famous Bikolano dish, Laing or spicy taro leaves with creamy coconut sauce, was also highlighted thanks to Chef Rommel Abion. Proving that Bicolanos have a penchant for spicy food, Abion cooked the traditional Laing and enhanced it by adding in steamed sweet potatoes and shrimp.

Steamed sweet potato stuffed in spicy taro leaves with creamy coconut sauce

Herbs and cashew nut-crusted beef tenderloin in Bistek sauce, puree of squash, green pea coulis, sago and kalamansi kropek and crispy shallot

Ginataang lamang dagat with Salinas curry sauce, seafood custard and shrimp bisque froth

Ginataang lamang dagat was prepared by Chef Mcrhyan Rodrigo during the last regional leg in Luzon. He served his winning dish with salinas curry sauce, seafood custard, and shrimp bisque broth.

These chefs from Luzon, together with the regional winners from Visayas and Mindanao, will go head-to-head in the highly anticipated grand finals wherein the next culinary master in the country will finally be named.

Dream Holiday Getaway is Just a Reddoorz Away

It's the ‘Ber months and it’s time to plan that holiday getaway with friends or family. What's holding back most people from going all out to make their dreams get real is budget concerns. Now, RedDoorz with its all-out traveller perks and budget-friendly rates will make this the most memorable holiday vacay ever.

This Holiday Season, why not target these new places where RedDoorz has opened up and making a big difference in the travel scene?

Davao

If your dream vacay is a nature trip, with some history, exotic scenery, shop-till-you-drop shopping and glorious, inexpensive food, mark Davao for your next adventure.

The Crocodile Park, the Philippine Eagle sanctuary, the Davao Butterfly House, Eden Nature Park and Resort, zipline adventures and more, are what make Davao a heaven on earth for thrill-seekers and adrenaline-junkies. Climb the summit of the “King of the Philippine Peaks,” Mt. Apo and get a 360-degree view from the country’s highest peak. Or go island-hopping and take a dip in the waters of world-class beaches.

Vacations are never complete without feasts. Enjoy native Dabawenyo dishes like sinugbang tuna (grilled tuna), inato (grilled chicken), pasayan (deep-fried shrimp), kinhason (baked scallops), and imbaw (clam soup). Sample their pomelo and durian products ranging from fresh fruit to candies to ice cream and shake. There are 22 RedDoorz hotels in the heart of this big city that will be your launch pad for your holiday adventure.

Palawan

For indelible memories, Palawan is Ground Zero for you. The natural beauty of its beaches, rivers and caves plus the tropical vibe that this island brings will mesmerize you.

Here’s where you’ll find its most popular attraction – the Puerto Princesa Underground River, the world’s longest navigable underground river – that has made it one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

The Ihawig River is a perfect place to commune with nature and just feel good to be alive. A visit to this historic river will not be complete unless you experience its most famous tourist attraction, firefly watching.

And to complete your magical experience in Palawan, experience the sands of the popular Honda Bay. You can use the site as a jump-off place for a lot of other islands to travel to. Choose from any of 13 RedDoorz hotels in Palawan to be nearest the island attraction you want best.

Tagaytay

Sometimes you don’t need to go far to escape the stress of the city. Only a few hours away from the noise of Manila, you can find solitude and a much-needed break whenever you want.

Enjoy the City’s varied attractions, from the mind challenging and jaw-dropping Puzzle Mansion where you can find the most extensive collection of Jigsaw Puzzles in the world. The lady who completed all the 2D, 3D and 4D puzzles here – some as big as murals – is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the unmatchable number and kinds of puzzles she completed.

Enjoy Tagaytay’s cool breeze and chilly evenings with a romantic dinner or even just a hot sip of healthy Tagaytay Bulalo.

Don’t miss its most famous attraction - the People’s Park in the Sky. It stands at the highest point of Tagaytay and lets you have a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape, the best vantage point to see Taal Lake and Volcano. If you want rides and kiddie adventures, visit the Sky Ranch for rides and panoramic views. You can find the best branded items at outlet stores in Sta.Rosa where you’ll find quality, outlet-priced gifts to give for the holiday season.

RedDoorz at the Ridge, Mahogany and Sta. Rosa are all just minutes away from all the best Tagaytay landmarks.

But whatever location you choose, booking your RedDoorz hotel will be easy as pie because the RedDoorz App is your go-to companion for your discovery adventure. This user-friendly, 100% safe app allows you to compare hundreds of hotels, get real time prices, read traveller reviews so you can plan your trip in detail. Once you’re there, RedDoorz will pamper you with free Wifi, clean beds, clean sheets, free toiletries, unlimited water and a pleasant experience – all for very affordable rates. Even paying is easy! You can use credit cards, Dragonpay or pay-at-hotel without need for credit card guarantee.

Just one RedDoorz away should also mean that entire discovery, booking experience is just “one-app” away and few clicks

So for the holidays, don’t be afraid to pursue your adventure. There are RedDoorz Hotels - RedDoorz, RedDoorz Plus or RedDoorz Premium - that fits your budget. You’ll be glad to know that a RedDoorz Hotel is just “one app and a few clicks away” in whatever city you choose. 09/07/2019 (Bits of Rocks)

Barefoot Wines Bring "The Barefoot Ark" Making the World a Kinder Place

In a world filled with cruelty, climate change, wars and all-around bad news, it’s no wonder people turn towine for just a little more positivity. One wine brand takes it a few steps further. Barefoot Wines.

Barefoot Wines believes that creating massive positive change starts with little acts of kindness. Just a little kind word here, a kind deed there, all build up to snowball and create the kind of world we would all be happy to live in.

This is why on August 29, 2019, Barefoot Wines launches The Barefoot ARK, a kindness movement at changing things for the better, one small step at a time. ARK stands for Acts of Random Kindness – easy, little deeds that make the world just a little better for everyone.

Kicking o with a press launch at Gourmet Gypsy Art Café attended by around 50 representatives from traditional and digital media, The Barefoot Ark launch, unveiled its advocacy video, mission and vision.

Watch below my live coverage during the media launch:

Through the Barefoot ARK page on Facebook and Instagram, followers and volunteers are encouraged to do, post and share acts of random kindness. While deeds help brighten one person, creature or community’s life, posting and sharing these deeds help make social media a better place for the rest of us—brightening our feeds, encouraging others to do the same, and helping people know that despite the darkness, there are glimmers of light created by kind people everywhere.

And here is my live coverage during the discussion of the Barefoot Ark:

Aside from just the page and the social media movement calling for acts of kindness, Barefoot encourages and motivates through its monthly search for ARK of the Month where acts of random kindness posted on social media may be nominated to win prizes care of the company.

Barefoot Wines is a specialty wine brand from California known for its distinctly fun personality, and as the brand pioneered worthy-cause marketing, supporting people and causes such as the environment, education and community building. Brought to the Philippines by Emperador Distillers, Inc. and exclusively distributed by S&R Membership Shopping, Barefoot Wines brings with it its tradition of worthy causes, beginning with the ARK movement.

A gift of gratitude just like these below were shared to us:

6 Escape Ideas RedDoorz Provides

It’s that season between vacay-happy Summer and the coming ‘Ber months. Traffic, too much work, piled up tasks and pressure can likely get you down.

There’s one word that will lift you up. Escape. The very thought of it is the ultimate adventure, whether just around the city or in destinations around the Philippines.

According to the still ongoing Framingham Heart Study, men and women who travel often are less likely to get heart disease. It also found that because travel relieves stress, it improves mental health, boosts the immune system and promotes fitness.

The good news is, it’s so easy to travel these days. Affordable hotels with quality accommodations like RedDoorz have 150+ properties in 10+ cities all over the Philippines. The RedDoorz travel app, downloadable from the Apple store or Google Play Store, puts staycations or out of town trips literally at one’s fingertips.

You can escape anytime you want and find an affordable RedDoorz hotel from north to south. Here are 6 Escape ideas you can easily pull off when the spirit moves you:

1.              Do a Staycation. Treat the family to a fun weekend. Or just disappear for a day or two watching streamed movies all day. You can choose from boutique hotels, inns, apartels or condotels that are part of the RedDoorz partner chain. It won’t cost much, but the experience is priceless.

2.              Go Out of Town. You can easily book a room using the RedDoorz app and find your desired accommodation in Baguio, Pampanga, Metro Manila, Tagaytay, Palawan, Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod or  Davao. Just leave the world behind even for just a weekend. Even for just a day.

3.              Try a Couple Getaway. The pressure of work and the day to day grind of housekeeping can really be straining. Grab some time off with your special someone for some peace and quiet and rediscover the joy of each other’s company.

4.              Reward yourself. Pat yourself on the back for that promotion or the exam that you just passed. Celebrate your accomplishments and be kind to No. 1. Effortless travel is the best gift you can give yourself. A weekend in Palawan or Davao would be a really good choice!

5.              Celebrate a Special Occasion. Blow your birthday candles in the private cocoon of a RedDoorz hotel room. Toast one another on your special anniversary. You can even invent holidays and celebrate the victory of your winning team. It all feels extra good when you don’t have to wash the dishes yourself.

6.              Get some Me Time. Ultimately, the most important person is you. Discover the fun and adventure of solo travel and feel relaxed, recharged and rejuvenated.

This August, RedDoorz released its biggest sale ever! Just P499 per night on rooms anywhere in the Philippines till August 31. You can paint the town red in any RedDoorz town you want. 08/14/2019 (Bits of Rocks)

When Spider-Man Meets Lastikman!

What if Spider-Man meet his Pinoy counterpart, our very own Lastikman?!

Well, this much awaited face-off took place during the recently concluded ToyCon PH 2019 at the SMX Convention Center in SM Mall of Asia. As I've told you in my previous posts, I'll be having a special blog post for this meetup since yours truly spidey interviewed Lastikman!

So mga karockers, are you ready to see Spider-Man and Lastikman together? Here are some of our selfies:

Actually the man behind this Lastikman costume is no other than the model Dani Sindo. Unknowingly, we are already friends in Facebook before this meetup. And yes, he shared exciting things about him during our exclusive one-on-one interview.

And here is our vlog interview:

Curious how he looks like without a mask? Well here he is unmask and undress (oops...):

Yeah, this is Dani's first time to be in a cosplay. He perfectly fits the suit, the physique, and the characteristics of the modern Mars Ravelo's Lastikman! Hope that the Kapamilya network will consider him as the new Lastikman once they make their new movie or teleserye versions of it previously played by Vic Sotto and Mark Bautista in the movie while Vhong Navarro in the TV series.

Here are more of his/our photos wearing the superhero suit:

What can you say about Dani a.k.a. Lastikman?! Thanks bro! See you soon in the upcoming events! 07/09/2019 (Bits of Rocks)

Spider-Man Joins Lastikman, Darna, and Captain Barber!

If there is an Avengers and Justice League  for the Marvel and DC comics wherein their superheroes join forces for a common goal, here in our local version we have the so-called "Sanlakas" featuring the Mars Ravelo's creations namely Darna, Lastikman, and Captain Barber in one great power!

But just recently during my first ever ToyCon PH experience, the merging of powers of these Pinoy superheroes was twisted. Spider-Man joined the game! And yeah, yours truly played spidey!

Well, here is the union of Mars Ravelo's so-called komiks universe with yours truly as Spider-Man:

But wait there's more! Spider-Man even posed selfie photos with each superhero! Let's check these out:

A Pose Like Darna

Unleashing the Power with Captain Barber

Who is More Elastic with the Lastikman?

Captain Barber got one more request, to have a closer selfie with spidey:

The Miniature Lebron James and Stephen Curry

Basketball is now my game! Most of my sports events, I covered basketball. I even featured different basketball players in my vlogs and blogs. And yeah, I already interviewed many PBA and NBA icons!

During the Toycon 2019, I just bought two toys. They are the miniature NBA players namely Lebron James and Stephen Curry - two of the iconic NBA players! James is my childhood player while Curry is my current NBA #lodi.

So without further ado, here are my miniature James and Curry:

These miniature NBA superstars were not only cute, they were also adorable since their heads were moving!

What can you say about these two? Will share more of my #ToyCon2019 experience later in my next posts so stay tune! 07/05/2019 (Bits of Rocks)
