Creative Snacks for Homeschool Recess

As students prepare to take their classes online for their safety amid the pandemic, it is important to keep them fueled and motivated for school. To help boost their creativity and learning, Solane, the country’s leading LPG solutions provider, suggests smart tips for creative snacks that are perfect for study breaks:

Turn Recess into a Fun Learning Session

Create fun snacks during craft-making day. Parents can bake butter cookies, cupcakes or cakes while kids decorate them with designs like the planets of the solar system or their favorite literary characters. The key is to think out of the box and prep ahead of time or during the weekend so everything is ready for a quick snack break. Doing this can help make their homeschooling experience more fun and give them something enjoyable to look forward to every week.

Have a weekly themed recess. Turn recess into an opportunity to learn something new. It can be a fun science experiment like turning milk into ice cream or it can be a short “tour around the world,” discovering different cultures through food. Serve them various cuisines as their snacks with a new country as the theme every day or every week.

Make bento boxes. Some parents struggle to make their kids eat nutritious foods. To encourage and excite the kids to eat well-balanced meals, why not make bento boxes? Utilize colorful ingredients or shape them into cute animals to make the bento box visually appetizing. Other great ideas for bento lunch sets are sushi sandwiches with sliced fruits or nori-wrapped rice sandwiches that can be made from leftovers.

Incorporate food that boost memory and concentration. Help kids get through their homeschool hours by preparing “brain food” to boost memory and concentration. Try fruit bowls or smoothies with blueberries, strawberries, kiwis and oranges. Studies show that these fruits contain vitamin C and antioxidants, which help prevent mental decline and improve communication in the brain cells, respectively. Be sure to include fatty fish like salmon, sardines, tuna, mackerel, which are rich in omega-3s for better cognition and thinking abilities.

Prepare these fun and healthy snack options suggested by Solane to help students be well and learn better. To know more, visit www.solane.com.ph. 08/12/2020 9Bits of Rocks)

5 Must-Know Tips on Preparing a Safer and Healthier Baon

With the easing of quarantine protocols in many parts of the country, employees are starting to adapt to the new normal and return to work. However, things aren't quite back to how they used to be. For instance, many restaurants are still closed, or are open but with limited capacity which, among other important issues, limits the food choices for Filipino workers during break time.

To help with this, Solane, the country's leading LPG brand, offers some tips on safely preparing healthy baon that you can bring to work.

Clean your cooking space. Prior to cooking, make sure to clean every kitchen surface and equipment that your food will come into contact with to stop bacteria from spreading. This includes the countertops, cutting boards, pans, dishes, and even utensils. Wash or wipe them down with warm, soapy water and dry them with a clean cloth or paper towel. Also, do not forget to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Cook with fresh ingredients. Now more than ever, preparing a healthy meal is essential, and cooking at home enables you to do so. Avoid canned or processed food. Instead, buy fresh and high-quality ingredients. Fresh food can really improve your health since it retains more nutrients. Also, you can enjoy a tastier meal because you get the most flavor possible from fresh ingredients. Try supporting local businesses and buy your groceries from them. Many reputable sellers are on social media and offer delivery.

Use insulated containers. Using an insulated lunch box and containers is the best option for packing your meals. Consider investing in them if you haven’t yet. They can keep your food warm and help minimize bacterial contamination and growth. Another advantage of having insulated containers is that they are reusable, eco-friendly, and may be safer. Single-use plastic containers and food wraps may carry a higher risk of cross-contamination.

Store food properly. To avoid rushing to cook your lunch in the morning, it's a good idea to prepare your meal the night before, or even days ahead. When prepping ahead of time, it’s also advisable to know how to store your food properly to maintain its quality. If you’re storing freshly cooked food, let your food cool first for a few minutes before putting it in your fridge to avoid spoilage. Cook a big batch, then divide it into small portions and put in separate containers for each day of the workweek. Also, always check the shelf life of the meals you make.

Turn off all heat sources. After you are done preparing your meals, make sure to turn off all the cooking equipment that you used, especially the gas stove and the LPG cylinder. Moreover, it is best to cook with a trusted liquefied petroleum gas brand like Solane to help ensure safety in the kitchen.

A Heartwarming Celebration for Dad this Father’s Day

This year’s Father’s Day may not be quite normal for all of us, especially with the ongoing pandemic. While we can’t celebrate this special occasion with a big gathering to honor and express our love for Dad, we can still make him feel loved on Father’s Day with these heartwarming ways suggested by Solane, the country’s leading LPG solutions provider:

Prepare his favorite dishes. This special day for dads is the perfect opportunity to cook his favorite dishes. If he’s a meat lover, then you can prepare a spread of burgers, steaks and barbecue. If he is trying to be more healthy, try out some new vegan recipes. Don’t forget to complement his favorite dishes with his favorite drink!

Host a surprise virtual party with his buddies. Because of social distancing rules, you can’t invite dad’s friends over, but you can still make it a memorable occasion by throwing him a virtual surprise party with his friends. Arrange for packs of drinks and pica-pica to be delivered to his friends’ houses and along with an invite indicating the time and log-in details for the online surprise party. Tell guests to sign in a little later than your dad for the added surprise effect. For sure, Dad will enjoy having drinks with his buddies who hasn’t seen in a while.

Grow a garden. If you’re thinking of a refreshing bonding activity with your dad, consider working on a gardening project together. The plants can add a breath of fresh air to your home during community quarantine. If you grow vegetables and fruits, you can also use them next time you cook in the kitchen together. Moreover, growing a family garden presents a great opportunity to putdown your phones and interact with each other face-to-face. That would be a very meaningful gift to give our dads this Father’s Day.

Build something together. Does your dad enjoy building things? This Father’s Day, why not join him and suggest to make something together like a birdhouse or plant box. If the kids are too young to use the tools, bring out the paintbrushes and let them decorate the DIY projects.

Go glamping indoors. In the house’s living room, set up a big mat with pillows, blankets, or beanie bags, where the entire family can comfortably huddle together for a night of bonding. Prepare smores, hotdogs on sticks, and other yummy snacks to lend to the camping feel, but a glamorous one, of course!

Even with everything that’s going on in the world, our dads deserve to have a fun and memorable Father’s Day celebration. For more tips and recipe ideas or to order your Solane LPG to cook for dad, visit www.solane.com.ph. 06/17/2020 9Bits of Rocks)

Tips for Economical Cooking at Home

One of the best things that came about during the lockdown is the onslaught of online cooking videos found across all social media platforms. More and more people are honing their culinary skills by experimenting and trying out new recipes in the kitchen. While this is great, it’s always good to keep a few important things in mind, most especially conserving energy and avoiding food waste when preparing meals for the family.

Here are some useful tips from  Solane, one of the country’s leading LPG solutions provider, on saving energy, time and ingredients in the kitchen:

Get your ingredients ready. Some people tend to prepare the ingredients in the middle of the cooking session while the cooking gas is on. Not only is this a waste of time but also an unnecessary waste of gas. Be sure to prepare all the ingredients ahead of cooking time and put them within your reach as you cook. That way, you don’t need to run around the kitchen to hunt for ingredients, making your cooking time shorter. This will also help you  save cooking gas.

Defrost before cooking. Some of us are probably using our microwave to defrost our frozen food. Doing this consumes a lot of electricity, when our aim is to save money on our bills. Instead of using a microwave, take out frozen ingredients ahead of cooking time, place them on the counter and thaw at room temperature.

Use low heat as much as possible. If you’re cooking or tenderizing meat by boiling, make sure to cover the pot with the lid and lower the heat as soon as it starts to boil. Leave it simmering until soft and tender. You are making the most of your cooking fuel by doing this.

Choose your burner. The bigger the burner, the more energy or cooking gas is used. When you’re using a small pan to cook, use a smaller burner. But If you have only one burner or your burners are of the same size, turn down the flame as soon as food starts to boil to maximize cooking gas.

Keep your LPG well-maintained. Keep your household safe by turning off the LPG cylinder valves when not in use. Do a regular maintenance check on your stove and LPG tank such as checking if your burners, regulators and hose are clean and functioning well and that the LPG tank is in good working condition. Regular inspection of your stove and  LPG is a good safety and energy-saving practice.

Cooking at home is great but remember to be practical and smart about it. Save your time, money and maximize your cooking gas by following these easy hacks from Solane. For more information, visit www.solane.com.ph. 06/05/2020 (Bits of Rocks)

Let's Go Green: Yorme Isko Moreno Returns to the Place Where He Started

Mayor ISKO MORENO threaded an impoverished area in Manila while growing up.  As the elected City Mayor of Manila, more popularly known to Filipinos as Yorme, he never wavered amidst adversities hurled at him for taking several steps in making a better version of the city he fondly calls his home and crowning glory. Bold and fearless, Yorme puts his heart and mind in anything he does - “Believe in yourself! You’ve got nothing to lose.”

Yorme recently signed Ordinance 8607 declaring the permanence of Arroceros Forest Park dubbed as the “Last lung of the City”, home to 61 tree varieties and 8,000 ornamental plants. The new ordinance forbids the cutting of trees and dumping of waste within the park. Part of his plan is to allocate P1 million solely for its preservation and maintenance away from urbanization and all these efforts stem from his greater plan to make Manila a “Green City”.

Yorme firmly believes in the power of nature. It’s no secret that he advocates on using natural products. No wonder, early this year Yorme became the newest brand ambassador of NOVUHAIR, Nature’s Answer to Hair Loss. Watch the full video at https://youtu.be/udvLJKXesYE
